This archive forms the basis of Alan Powers' new survey of 20th-century houses, which features 200 color and duotone images from the pages of "COUNTRY LIFE. Arranged in chronological chapters, from the 1920s to the 1990s, the book is preceded by an enlightening introductory essay on the changing nature of architectural style over the course of a century. Following on the succesful heels of 20th Century Architecture in the Netherlands and 20th Century Urban Design in the Netherlands comes a third survey focused on highlights and developments in the field of garden and landscape design -- in the Netherlands, obviously. Decade by decade, themes discussed include: the transition from utilitarian greenery to greenery for consumption; the Zuiderzee Works; changes in agriculture; the role of the Rijkswaterstaat (Director-General for Public Works and Water Management); the Ecological Master Plan; garden design on country estates, the transformation of managed nature into new nature; and the development of public gardens and parks. Projects are illustrated through historic and contemporary photographic material, plans, and design drawings, and are discussed throughout in light of broad social developments, fashionable trends, and changing recreational demands.
